Grief isn’t something that only happens after a loss. For many people, it begins much earlier — when a loved one is seriously ill, living with dementia, or reaching the final stages of life. This is called anticipatory grief, and it can be just as powerful and painful.
At First 4 Health Group, we’re hearing more from patients and carers who are navigating these emotions while also dealing with practical challenges like hospital visits, care responsibilities, and making difficult decisions.
We want to reassure you: you are not alone.
💛 What is anticipatory grief?
Anticipatory grief is the emotional pain that arises before a loss. It can include:
Worry about what’s ahead
Feelings of helplessness or guilt
Exhaustion from caregiving
Confusion around legal and practical matters (like wills or lasting power of attorney)
🤝 Help is on the way
We’re working on a series of community sessions to provide:
A safe, understanding space to talk about grief
Guidance on preparing emotionally and practically
Support for families and carers before and after a loss
Resources from local partners and experts in end-of-life care
These sessions will reflect the cultural, emotional, and spiritual needs of our diverse Newham community.
